Description

Description

The Molina portal is one of the main legacies of the medieval fortress city of Albarracín.

It is part of the walled enclosure built in the 11th century to protect the population residing in the suburb, a neighborhood that emerged on the outskirts of the founding urban center.

However, the gate preserved today is the result of a reconstruction and fortification of the walls carried out between the 13th and 14th centuries.

This reform would give the access a much more defensive character, becoming flanked by two large masonry towers with a square floor plan, as well as protected by a machicolation located on the upper canvas.

From this structure, now blinded, all kinds of hurtful materials would be thrown at the enemy armies to prevent them from entering the city.

From this portal began the road that led to the Kingdom of Castile and led to the town of Molina de Aragón (Guadalajara), from which it takes its name.

In front of the interior face of the portal is another of the heritage assets most loved by the residents of Albarracin and visitors, the one known as “Casa de la Julianeta”.

It is one of the few popular constructions from the 14th century preserved today in Albarracín, which provides us with invaluable information about construction techniques and the medieval way of life.
