Portal del Agua
Descripción
El portal del Agua es una puerta de pequeñas dimensiones practicada en la muralla que protegía el arrabal de Albarracín.
Fue seguramente construida en el siglo XI, en época musulmana, y reconstruida y fortificada como el resto del sistema defensivo en los siglos XIII y XIV.
Permitía a la población el acceso al camino que descendía hasta el río Guadalaviar, recibiendo por ello el nombre de portal “del Agua”.
La puerta, construida en piedra sillar, está integrada por un arco de medio punto hacia el exterior y un arco rebajado al interior.
La restauración de la cara interna de este tramo de muralla permitió recuperar la escalera y la galería que daban acceso al cuerpo de guardia situado sobre el arco.
Este cuerpo sirve además de ingreso del torreón anexo de planta cuadrada.
El portal del Agua estuvo originalmente custodiado por la llamada torre de la Muela, hoy desaparecida, que se situaba en la ladera contraria del río Guadalaviar.
Description
The Water Portal is a small door made in the wall that protected the suburb of Albarracín.
It was probably built in the 11th century, during the Muslim era, and rebuilt and fortified like the rest of the defensive system in the 13th and 14th centuries.
It allowed the population access to the road that descended to the Guadalaviar River, thus receiving the name “Water” portal.
The door, built of ashlar stone, is made up of a semicircular arch to the outside and a lowered arch to the inside.
The restoration of the internal face of this section of wall allowed the recovery of the staircase and gallery that gave access to the guardhouse located above the arch.
This body also serves as the entrance to the annexed square tower.
The Water Portal was originally guarded by the so-called Torre de la Muela, now missing, which was located on the opposite slope of the Guadalaviar River.
